| The mechanical properties of nanostructured metals differ from their macroscopic counterparts. This is not only true for nanocrystalline metals but also for nanoporous metals, such as nanoporous Au. These materials bring together two seemingly conflicting properties: high strength and high porosity. Until recently, the complex three-dimensional structure of nanoporous Au could not be resolved with any tomography method. Focused ion beam nanotomography (FIB-nt) is a novel microscopy technique that enables unique, high-resolution three-dimensional imaging. With a resolution of 2 nm x 3 nm x 6nm, the data for nanoporous Au exhibit the current record for the FIB-nt method. | ||
