Sandwich technology specialist Diab and its business partner Chimpex have fabricated a nose for the Alstom high-speed train ETR 675 for Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiattori SpA, a private transport companies network in Italy.
The two companies developed material required to improve the mechanical properties and concept of the fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) sandwich to be used for the ETR 675 with the aim of saving weight while keeping the stiffness of the material. Using an infusion process, the material also met the stringent FST (fire, smoke and toxicity) requirements of the industry standard EN 45545-2, which regulates fire safety on trains across the European Union. Diab’s Divinycell P60 material, with PSC/GRC finishing, was used to realize all sandwich parts of the nose, with a difference in thickness depending on the stiffness and weight requirements.
