The aim of the proposed initiative is to encourage young girls (pupils or students) to choose doing research and take jobs in materials science and, more generally, in STEM.

Colloquia across the Kaliningrad region of Russia

Dr. Valeria Rodionova, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Russia, and colleagues.

Dr. Valeria Rodionova, launched the Laboratory of novel magnetic materials at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad, Russia) in 2013. The laboratory is a realization of her postgraduate dream: using fundamental results obtained in material science for biomedical applications. Currently Valeria’s team is engaged in the development of electromagnetic manipulators for 3D assembly of cellular and tissue structures.

The laboratory members promote gender equality and provide different activities directed to solving the problem of women representation in science. This year the laboratory won the prize of the best poster presentation at the Inspiring Women in Science event held at The International Conference on Fine Particle Magnetism -2019 (Gijón, Spain).

The initiative proposed consists of a series of colloquia to be held in schools and universities across the Kaliningrad region of Russia. Colloquia topics will cover issues of doing research in materials science: balancing science and life, dealing with problems, understanding advantages of doing research in the modern world. Successful women researchers with personal experience of working in the field of materials science will be invited to give guest talks. The aim of the proposed initiative is to encourage young girls (pupils or students) to choose doing research and take jobs in materials science and, more generally, in STEM.
