The special issue collection includes work published in seven of our leading Materials Journals and it was edited by Dr Dong Wang, Professor Wantai Yang and Professor Liqun Zhang.

This year the college of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) celebrated its diamond anniversary. When the BUCT was founded in 1958, the CMSE was established to meet the demand of advanced materials for the development of national economics, being one of the top-rated academic and research institutions devoted to macromolecular science and engineering in China. After 60-year development, CMSE has grown to be one of the largest academic centers for materials research in the world, especially for polymeric materials.

The faculty members in CMSE have expanded rapidly in recent decades, and their research interests now encompass many fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, and chemical engineering. With the integration of emerging areas of biomaterials, computational simulation, nanoscience, biotechnology, and green technology, the academic activities in CMSE are developing towards more interdisciplinary and crossing the boundaries between different industrial sectors and thus have been proved to be fruitful.

Elsevier would like to thank the researchers for publishing their excellent work in our journals and to wish the department every success for the future!
