“Clay-Polymer Nanocomposites: Morphology, Structure, Properties and Applications” (The book) will summarize existing knowledge on clay-polymer nanocomposites from the basic concepts of synthesis and characterization to their applications in timely topics such as high performance composites, environment and energy issues. The book covers many aspects of processing clay/polymer nanocomposites by mixing pristine or modified clays with polymers; or by in situ polymerization within the interlamellar spacing of the clays. Towards this end, a broad range of polymers will be covered: vinylic, methacrylates, polyesters, natural polymers, epoxy, and conjugated polymers. Chemical and radiation-induced strategies of polymer attachment to clays will be described. The book will address emerging processing methods based on Pickering emulsions, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition or electrospinning.
Several chapters will be dedicated to the characterization of clay-polymer nanocomposites in terms of spectroscopic features, morphology, crystallographic, mechanical and rheological properties. As far as applications are concerned, the book will address the growing role of
clay-polymer nanocomposites for energy storage and power sources, removal of pollutants, optical materials, soft nanocomposites for biomedical applications, antifouling surfaces to name but a few.
Two sections will be considered besides the basic science and applied aspects of clay-polymer nanocomposites: theory and modeling to understand the dispersion of clay in polymer matrices and modeling the fracture mechanics of clay nanocomposites on the other hand.
We anticipate The book will be long term valuable for students, academic and industrial researchers, technicians and engineers working on this hot topic of clay-polymer nanocomposites and those who are involved in the general domain of materials science.
