While the potential usefulness of NSOM in thebiological field may be more obvious, there are many ways NSOM can contribute to materials science. We will see that the 100 nm resolution afforded by the current NSOM has enabled researchers to study optical phenomena at unprecedented length scales. The results have already brought new knowledge and new insight into this sub-field of materials science and engineering. NSOM is now a mainstay in nanometer scale materials characterization.
