In 2009, NPL hosted the first one-day workshop that brought well over 50 leading academic and industrial researchers in this field together for the first time in a focused attempt to share experiences in the practical application of in situ fields with simultaneous Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction studies. The outcome of that event was a new web based resource for sharing best practice. We are now planning our second workshop that will bring together experts from the multiferroics and magnetoelectrics and ferroelectrics communities with neutron and synchrotron facility users to present the latest developments in this field. A discussion forum will be held during the afternoon, to examine the experimental uncertainties around applying in situ electric, magnetic and stress fields in X-ray and neutron experiments, as well as wider issues in materials processing, crystal growth and sample preparation.
