BCT adds that during manufacturing and repair, changes in composite components from normal shape can be critical. BCT says that its adaptive machining capabilities can abe used for more efficient manufacturing of large and complex carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.

Typical applications include the minimisation of air gaps between structural parts by machining adjacent components separately, as well as the automated removal of surplus material.

The manual repair of CFRP structures is particularly time consuming. BCT says that both its stationary and mobile automated scarfing solutions can significantly shorten the time an aircraft is on the ground and improve the quality of patch repair preparations.

The recently developed 5-axis mobile milling machine is lightweight and equipped with an optical scanner and adaptive machining software. It can automatically prepare composite structures for patch repair.
