BIC was interested in using a natural and sustainable glass replacement for its boards and after initial contact at the JEC composites show in Paris, it worked with Composites Evolution to find the best product for the board. Composites Evolution supplied BIC with its Biotex Flax 200gsm material, which is then used alongside Paulownia wood and cork to create the boards, which is made in sizes ranging from 3 m-4.2 m.

Lower energy

Biotex Flax offers improved flexure and vibration performance, the company says. Flax fiber is a naturally sourced material with similar flex and tensile strength to glass fiber, but can be more durable. It also uses lower energy in production than glass fiber.

‘By replacing glass fiber with Biotex Flax, BIC are able to manufacture a high performance, high quality board with less environmental impact,’ said Gordon Bishop, MD at Composites Evolution.
