The current requirement for utilities in California, is that 20% of electricity must come from renewable energy, something the state is close to achieving.

Brown said in an interview with the Associated Press: “I know one thing: Being dependent on foreign fossil fuel is not good for our economy, it’s not good for our security, and it’s not good for our climate. We have to be bold.”

The announcement is likely to be well received by the renewable energy industry, for which the legislation would provide investor certainty.
