“We really wanted to win the double,” said skipper James Spithill following the race. “We started okay, but got mixed up in the pack. But JK (tactician John Kostecki) got us back into it and then the boys did a fantastic job. We were able to stretch away and use our speed.”

San Diego is the last event of the calendar year for the America’s Cup World Series. The teams will now have four months of winter training before the next AC World Series event in Naples, Italy, in April.

America's Cup World Series

The America's Cup World Series is a regular circuit of regattas, bringing Cup racing to top venues around the world. The AC World Series allows the teams and their sailors to prepare for the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America's Cup Challenger Series and the America's Cup Finals.

The boats

The first of two new designs for the 34th America’s Cup, the AC45 catamaran made its debut in Auckland in January. The AC45 will allow the teams to grow their experience on wingsailed multihulls. The 45 will be used throughout 2011 and 2012 in the America’s Cup World Series events before giving way to the AC72s for the Louis Vuitton Cup.

The hull of the AC45 is a sandwich structure of carbon epoxy composite with a honeycomb core. The boat is powered by a wing that towers over 20 m above the deck.
