Are you interested in being part of an Early Career Editorial Board on Composites Communications?

Composite Communications (COCO) is to form an Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) to recognize outstanding early career researchers and provide an opportunity to perform an editorial role on a key international Journal. With that in mind, the Journal’s Editorial team invite Early Career Researchers to apply for one of a number of positions on the inaugural ECEB.  Are you interested in applying? Read on to see if this may be an opportunity for you.

Composites Communications publishes peer-refereed short communications and letters on the latest advances and progresses in composites science and technology. It aims to disseminate new knowledge to the broad composites community in a timely fashion, with a rapid review and publication process.

Why should I consider becoming a Member of our ECEB board?

Are you a highly experienced Composites Early Career Researcher looking to gain experience working for a key Scientific Journal in your field? If so, this is a good path for those with ambitions of becoming future Journal Editors (or who are seeking other Journal-related roles). In addition, the visibility of being affiliated with a Journal in this role could boost your research career - allowing you to find, collaborate and network with a wider group of research colleagues, as well as connect with Senior Editors and Board Members on the Journal. For those who excel in the role, there is the opportunity to step up to the senior Editorial Board of Composites Communications.

How do we define an Early Career Researcher (ECR)?

ECRs are defined as those who have completed their doctoral degree and are within a period of between 5-10 years after receiving their PhD (untenured); they currently hold an independent academic position or are senior researchers in Industry/Government research institutes.

What are the responsibilities of ECEB members?

  • KEY TASK: Conduct reviews for 6-8 submissions to COCO annually.
  • KEY TASK: Be an ambassador for COCO and promote the journal via social media, conferences, and other channels (please note that this is a key task for ECEB members).
  • Be encouraged to consider proposing or even submitting prospective manuscript(s) to the journal. This could be, for example as a lead or other author, but could also involve encouraging and inviting colleagues from within your research network to submit papers. NB: these papers would be processed like any other regular submission.
  • Provide consultation on manuscripts to the journal editors at their request
  • Advise the Journal’s Editors and Publisher on strategic elements related to your field of expertise that are important for the Journal to take into consideration and follow.
  • Assist with special issues under the guidance and discretion of the journal editors (or senior Editorial Board Members).
  • Potentially work on special projects related to the Journal, with mentorship being provided by a Member of the Senior Editorial Board
  • Attend a number of (currently) Virtual Board Meetings (to be agreed)

How long is my term on the ECEB?

A term for COCO ECEB members is three years, with possible renewal for a second term (if eligibility continues to be met). Exceptional ECEB members could be elevated to the COCO senior Editorial Board, or recommended for similar roles on other Elsevier journals.

How do I apply?

Qualified early career researchers are required to submit a CV and application including name, affiliation (with a link to the applicant’s webpage), expertise, reviewing experience and a list of publications, in a single PDF file or MS Word document, by email to the COCO Publisher David Hopwood (d.hopwood[AT]elsevier.com ). Please use the “@” symbol in place of “[AT]”.

The application period is now open, and applications will be accepted until April 30th, 2022. All applications will be reviewed by the senior COCO editors. Those candidates who are successful will be invited to join the ECEB, will have their names and photographs posted on the webpage of the COCO Editorial Board - listed as members of the Composite Communications Early Career Editorial Board.

We look forward to receiving your application!
