Detecting single-molecule absorption

Laser excitation of surface-adsorbed molecules or nanostructures modulates the local electronic density of states, and can be detected by a scanning tunneling microscope with near-atomic resolution. Future applications range from single-molecule surface analysis to energy-transfer studies.
