My last Column was long, so this one will be shortish. The penultimate one was all about peculiarities of the Greek language; this one is about language again, and to demonstrate that, the heading is in Latin. When I was a schoolboy, I found I could only get into Cambridge University by passing a small examination in 
Latin, so of course the bit of Latin I learned all those years ago sticks in the memory like a burr. Hence today's title, which tells you that one word is enough for the wise;, but I might add that many words are not enough for the argumentative, and that covers most of us in our profession.
