Additive manufacturing (AM) is prompting major new directions of research in the materials science field owing to the complex and non-equilibrium conditions experienced during the consecutive heating and cooling cycles during the deposition process, and the need to adapt accordingly the materials systems and processing conditions. Additionally, the need for part certification requires the development and validation of processes, especially through in-line monitoring and metrology. There is an urgent need to understand the effect of the distinct thermal cycles during part production, namely, how they influence the microstructural evolution and consequently the mechanical and functional properties of AM builds. Addressing this challenge requires advanced materials characterization, supported by modelling and simulation tools to move towards optimization and certification of additive manufacturing.
This Special Issue in Materials & Design will publish high-quality contributions in the field of additive manufacturing, addressing process-microstructure-properties relationships; development of modelling and simulation tools for the prediction of material’s properties and process improvement; and the extreme importance of part qualification and certification using in-line methods to decrease production time and improve the reliability of performance of parts and engineering assemblies.
