The award was presented by Steven Vanackere, Belgian vice prime minister and minister of finance & sustainable development, at a ceremony in Brussels.

Umicore was assessed by a jury of 17 people, representing audit firms, civil society organisations, universities and previous winners.

In its report the jury mentioned Umicore's integrated reporting approach and on-line reporting format that makes it possible for readers to compile their own report. It also said that it was "particularly impressed with the materiality exercise established by the company" and praised Umicore's approach as a "model of sustainability integrated in large companies."

Tim Weekes, director of group communications, referred to the award as a valuable recognition of a real team effort.  “Developing the report took over two years and involved many internal and external stakeholders," he said. "While there are still many areas where we can improve, this award is strong endorsement of a reporting approach that is fully integrated with our Vision 2015 strategy."
