The international conference “Functional Integrated nano Systems - nanoFIS 2014” was held for the very first time from 3rd to 5th December 2014 in Graz, Austria, at the historical Old University. nanoFIS 2014 addressed important topics of Micro- and Nanoelectronics industry which is with a total of 250.000 employees of great strategic importance for Europe. nanoFIS 2014 was jointly organized by the Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH, one of the leading research companies in Austria, working in the field of materials engineering and technology, and Techkonnex - High-Tech Promotion, a company organizing high-tech events, conferences and workshops.

A total of 145 scientists, researchers, engineers, technologists, and advanced students – 40% of them female - from 26 nations joined the first nanoFIS 2014 and made the conference a huge success. Recent advances in Micro- and Nanoelectronics in particular in the topics “Advanced Functional Materials”, “Nanosensors”, “3D-System Integration & Packaging”, “Reliability” and “Innovative Manufacturing Processes” were presented in 48 talks and 45 poster contributions.

The organizers attracted world leading scientists in the field of nanoelectronics: Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, US, who is ranked among the world’s top 5 most cited researchers in nanotechnology, presented latest achievements on nanogenerators and perspectives of nanoscaled energy harvesting. Jong Min Kim from University of Oxford in UK, who was Senior Vice President for Technology at Samsung Electronics, gave a highly visionary presentation about future developments in Nanoelectronics and its significant impact to consumers. Lars Samuelson from Lund University in Sweden, one of the great pioneers in the field of nanowires, demonstrated enormous progress in nanowire technology and first commercialization by Spin-off companies fabricating nanowire based solar cells and LEDs.

Status and the future of the European Micro- and Nanoelectronics industry were addressed in the panel discussion “Airbus of Chips – Feasible European Reality or Science Fiction?” which was chaired by Michael Wiesmüller from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). Willy van Puymbroeck from the European Commission, Martin Schrems from the Austrian company ams AG, Livio Baldi from Micron Semiconductors Italia, Jong Min Kim, and Zhong Lin Wang discussed perspectives on how to keep this major European industry at the forefront. Key message was to focus on smart system development and system integration, which are core competences in Europe and are able to create future business opportunities for European Micro- and Nanoelectronics.

The participation of companies such as ams AG, SMT Setzer Meßtechnik, Austrian Institute of Technology, PLANSEE-SE and EVGroup from Austria, Raith GmbH and Finetech GmbH from Germany, and Boschman B.V. from Netherlands in the exhibition demonstrated the industrial relevance of the nanoFIS conference. Due to the promising success of the first nanoFIS 2014 this conference will be organized in the future as annual European forum for smart system development and system integration in Micro- & Nanoelectronics.
