Diamond, one of the crystalline forms of carbon, is among those elements best-known to the general public. The unique combination of the properties of this material, including its hardness, transparency throughout the visible region, moderately high dispersion and high refractive index (for a transparent medium) make diamond the preeminent gemstone.
