The production lines will be at a Toyota plant in Aichi Prefecture in central Japan and at an 80:20 joint venture factory operated with Panasonic in Shizuoka Prefecture. Together, the new lines represent an investment of around ¥10 billion (S120 million). They will be fitted to vehicles destined for markets in Japan, the US and Europe.

  • Toyota is said to be at an advanced stage of research on an “induction motor” which doesn’t use rare earth magnets, and that’s lighter and more efficient than the electric units currently fitted to its Prius cars.
