At Materials Today Bio, we want to engage with the next generation of researchers, and to represent a wider range of institutions and countries of the community. In order to do so, we have decided to establish an Early Career Researcher (ECR) Board.

Applicant requirements

  • PhD awarded within the last 10 years
  • Currently hold an academic position or are a senior researcher in industry/government institute
  • Researcher within the scope of Materials Today Bio
    • Biomaterials
    • Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
    • Cell encapsulation and cell engineering
    • Biomolecular and biomacromolecular engineering
    • Biofabrication
    • Biohybrid materials
    • Nanomedicine and bionanotechnology
    • Biosensors including BioMEMS, BioNEMS
    • Lab-on-a chip and organ-on-a chip
    • Actuators and soft/bioelectronics
    • Bioimaging and diagnosis
    • In vitro biological models
    • Hydrogels
    • Drug and gene delivery
    • Biopolymers
    • Bioinspired surfaces and interfaces
    • Living materials
    • Synthetic biology
    • Micro and nanofluidics for bioengineering or biological sciences
    • Responsive and adaptive systems
    • Modelling and simulation of biological systems with reference to experimental results
    • Bio-based materials

Expected duties

  • Conducting at least 2 reviews for the journal every year
  • Ambassador of the journal at events/conferences and on social media
  • Submitting one manuscript during the term of the role
  • Consultation with editors on manuscripts and policy matters as required
  • Assisting with special issues
  • Being encouraged to propose (or prepare) review papers or other contributions to the journal

Duration of term

  • Fixed term (2 years), with option of renewal
  • Evaluation of renewal will start 6 months before term ends

Evaluation and announcement

All applicants will subject to evaluation of the editorial board of Materials Today Bio. We aim to recruit 20-30 members for the board.  

Evaluation will take place within one month proceeding applicant submission deadline and an official announcement will be placed on the journal homepage and Materials Today social media platforms.

Materials Today Bio is a multidisciplinary journal that focuses on the interface between biology and materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, and medicine. From the design and assembly of novel structures, their functionalization and interaction with biological systems to bioimaging, therapies and diagnostics in healthcare, the journal will capture the most exciting advances and discoveries within this field.
