Congratulations to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura, recipients of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. The award commemorates the “invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources”.

A figure from the article, “Low-dislocation-density AlxGa1-xN single crystals grown on grooved substrates”, Shigekazu Sano, Theeradetch Detchprohm, Masahiro Yano, Ryo Nakamura, Shingo Mochizuki, Hiroshi Amano, Isamu Akasaki, Materials Science and Engineering B93 (2002) 197-201 reproduced above highlights the influence of low dislocation density on the photoluminescence intensity, a key factor contributing to the LED invention.
